Open Loops #112
š Welcome to the 112th issue of Out of Curiosity Open Loops, a weekly newsletter to help you think, grow, and build momentum.
My name is Reza, and every week, I sift through over 100 pieces of content ānewsletters, articles, podcasts, books, and (way too many) tweetsāto pull out the most interesting, actionable ideas.
As I shared in my update on Tuesday, Iāve decided to make two exciting changes to this newsletter. First, after nearly five years, Iām renaming it from Out of Curiosity to Open Loops. The new name reflects what this newsletter has become: a space for exploring intriguing ideas, sparking curiosity, and sharing actionable insights to help you think, grow, and move forward.
Second, Iāve moved this publication to beehiiv, a platform that offers better tools for curating content, improving the reader experience, and reaching more like-minded, curious individuals. While the name and platform are changing, the mission stays the same: delivering thoughtful ideas to challenge your thinking and inspire meaningful progress.
Thanks for being here - Iām excited to keep exploring and growing with you in this next chapter.
With that, letās dive into this weekās ideas!

Lifting weights is investing in your future self. Start now to be functional well into your 80s while increasing your attractiveness.

Walk when youāre bored. Walk when youāre stressed. Walk when youāre angry. Walk when you need creativity. Walk to gain clarity. Walking is the most underrated exercise on the planet. Just do it.

Stop looking for approval. Seeking approval is relying on external validation. Validation is an inside job.

A good friend is someone who talks shit to you in person and sticks up for you behind your back.
On the topic of going on more walks, Iāve been maintaining at 10k+ steps a day this year (currently @ 9,362 steps/day vs. 8,065 steps/day during 2023).
The goal is to turn it up to 15k steps/day next year, and maybe even use a weighted vest while doing so!
Recently I joined this initiative called Wise Walk to do the walking alongside a community, while consuming some intentional pieces of content.

You can make a first impression long before you meet its recipient, and the best way to do that is to show up regularly, even if you think that no one is watching.
Friction is at its highest at the start of any endeavour. To alleviate this, do one simple action that makes the beginning as frictionless as possible.
External motivation is a great tool for kickstarting a new routine, but can become a burden once the thrill wears off. What was once a cheerful check-in on someoneās progress can become a thorny pressure on oneās side if the habit is failing to hold. Ultimately, any commitment to showing up has to come from within. It has to stem from a fundamental belief that this routine or habit will make you a better person, and that regularly acting on this belief is the only way to manifest that vision.
I run every morning for one reason: It makes me a clearer thinker. I donāt do it because my watch is telling me that I burned 500 calories or someone extolled its benefits to me on some podcast. I do it because it reliably dispels whatever fog I had in my mind, which allows the rays of clarity to take its place.
